Reiki Healing Symbols - "Warning: Keep Out of Reach of Children....."

Ok, confession time for me.

I did something that I'm really not supposed to do: I started playing with the Reiki healing symbols before I'd gotten proper instruction. It was one of the most interesting experiences I've had out of all my time studying and practicing Reiki.

I'd always been a little precocious and a little ambitious, but I learned many lessons about Reiki and life from this experience.

I had been working with level one Reiki for a while, when I remembered that people talk about Reiki healing symbols. Being familiar with energy work, I decided to look them up and see if I could get some "ahead reading" done in my exploration.

The Reiki healing symbols increase power and enable distance healing.

I found out that traditionally, the Reiki healing symbols were kept secret. They would only revealed to someone when it was time to be trained in their use. There seemed to be much online debate as to whether you needed to be trained and attuned in order to use them, or if anyone with basic Reiki training could do anything with them.

There was one topic in particular that interested me: A symbol specifically for the purpose of sending Reiki energy over distance. This was the one that grabbed my attention, because as a level one practitioner, I was capable of giving Reiki directly, but not over distance.

This isn't one of the Reiki healing symbols, but it does capture some of the feel for what they look like.

Before I proceeded, I thought carefully about the possible consequences of engaging in unknown energy work. A powerful tool in trained hands can work wonders, but in untrained hands it can cause much damage. I remembered what I had been taught earlier: Reiki cannot do harm. Since the Reiki healing symbols were just a way of applying Reiki energy, then there was minimal chance of any harm. Since this was the case, I decided to make an experimental use of the distance symbol, just to see.

I was focusing on trying to give Reiki to my wife, who was some distance away (just to be clear, she had volunteered for the test), when I suddenly lost all concentration. I had felt the energy flow, but I didn't think it was going to my wife. I was about to get an education.

The Real Lesson I Learned

Over the next hour, I noticed that my normal equilibrium was thrown off. As soon as I realized this I stopped to figure out what was going on. I found myself coming face-to-face with something which I hadn't really wanted to process: Grief over my father's passing. As soon as I came to that realization, the floodgates opened up and I was, shall we say, out of commission for a while.

Later, I was to learn that the distance symbol can be used in terms of time as well, to heal the hurts of the past, and send Reiki energy into the future to help when needed.

What had happened was that the symbol had done it's job, after a fashion. The problem was I had no control over it and it had dredged up some buried feelings of grief and loss.

Did it harm me? No. Was it a pleasant experience that I'd want to repeat? Ummmmm... No. It was the perfect wake-up call to realize that the knowledge and skill is what is important. Without them, the Reiki healing symbols will be of no real help.

Everything In Life I Needed To Know I Saw On The Karate Kid (But Apparently Forgot).

When I told my Reiki teacher about my first experience with the Reiki healing symbols, she smiled and said that it's not that uncommon. I was reminded of a scene from The Karate Kid Part II:

A martial arts student (Daniel) is practicing with blunted weapons, and the teacher (Mr. Miyagi) is practicing with sharp ones. The master calls an end to the session, but the student can't resist. Daniel tries out the sharp weapons, and nearly causes a severe injury to himself. He turns to Mr. Miyagi and apologizes, saying he realizes that it was pretty stupid. The teacher told the student he said the same thing to his teacher when the same thing happened. The Miyagi's teacher agreed that it was stupid. He was also right.

The more familiar you are with energy work, and the clearer your mind, the better you will be at healing. Check out this resource to learn the "language" of energy work and healing,

In the trained hands of a level 2 or 3 practitioner, the reiki healing symbols increase healing the power and versatility, but until you're trained, stick to the basics. It will teach you through practice and experience what you need to know in order to use the symbols when the time is right for you.
